This unique panel discussion will focus on the importance of this iconic landmark project which will repurpose of a long-vacant property and serve to invigorate the surrounding community with more than 75,000 square feet of retail, 160 residential units, and 100,000 square feet of commercial, community and office uses. Built in 1901 by a prominent local businessman, the Hahne & Company building has undergone several changes in ownership, and eventually closed in 1986. After being eyed for various redevelopment plans in the 1990s to no avail, the historic building is finally being redeveloped. The $174 million project is a collaborative public-private partnership that will result in mixed-income housing, new street-level retail space, Newark’s first Whole Foods grocer, an arts and cultural center for Rutgers University, and hundreds of new permanent jobs and construction jobs. Once restored, the building will serve as a hub for artistic and technological innovation, helping to create a 24-7 community downtown. The project is to open in stages, in late 2016 and in 2017.
